RICE LAKE, Wis. (WJMC) — Rice Lake’s Empty Bowls event is set for tonight, from 4:30 until 7 p.m. at the Rice Lake High School cafeteria.

Handcrafted clay and wood bowls will be available for purchase, along with soup dinners and flights of soup, all to benefit the Feed Our Kids Rice Lake Backpack program.

Tina Henningsen, part of the FORK board of directors, explains the purpose and how the program needs have grown.

“Weekend food bags that go home during the school year for families that sign up for just that little extra nutrition to have around on weekends when school meals are not available,” Henningsen said.

“Now we service all kids from 3K at the Head Start program through seniors at the high school. And we are packing this year starting at 320 to 325 bags a week. Unfortunately, with the cost of food, now, and that number, we did need to cut back a little bit on what we’re putting in.”

Henningsen says they hope to raise more funds, in order to fund the program and restore the more recent cutbacks. The event will include a silent auction, and items can be viewed online.
