CHIPPEWA FALLS, Wis. (WJMC) — The Washburn County Sheriff’s Department and the Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office report an uptick in scam calls.

Reports say a New Auburn resident got a call spoofing the old number for the New Auburn Police Department, with the scammer claiming the resident had an active warrant.

Authorities say stop, take a second to consider the call, text or post before taking action. Directly contact your bank, the merchant or the law enforcement agency involved to follow up. Never follow the instructions or use phone numbers or links listed in the potential scam call or message, and never give out personal information via these contacts.

The Chippewa County Sheriff’s Department says, if something doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t.
