MADISON, Wis. (WRN) — Be careful of back to school deals that seem too good to be true.

Wisconsin Consumer Protection director Michelle Reinen says social media feeds are the target for the scammers.

“They send fake ads claiming to be trusted businesses like Amazon and those big box stores. And these ads offer amazing deals at low prices,” Reinen said. “But they lead shoppers to a nearly identical copy of a seller’s website that’s meant to steal your money and personal data.”

As always, Reinen says you should be wary of unsolicited ads or coupons in your media feeds, and use trusted websites and stores directly.
