SIREN, Wis. (WJMC) — Gov. Tony Evers is in Burnett County this weekend, to kick off the 2024 fishing season.

Friday evening, he attended the 58th annual Governor’s Fishing Opener Banquet, in Siren, hosted by the Northwest Wisconsin ITBEC Tourism Committee. Fishing is important to the state’s economy and culture, and it transcends politics, he said.

“Fishing is so important in the state and it’s just one of those opportunities for people across the state to get together,” Evers said.

The Governor was fishing Yellow Lake, near Webster, opening day. He said he was hoping to catch a 23-plus inch walleye.
