WASHINGTON, D.C. (WJMC) — The USDA has announced a new summer food program for students.
What happens to students across the country in the summertime? Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack has announced that’s when the new summer food program will kick in.
“The most nutritious meal that youngsters receive, outside the home, is at the school. This is a program that will provide parents of students, who are free and reduced lunch, an additional forty dollars a month for three months, 120 dollars per child, during the summer months, to be able to supplement the family’s ability to buy food,” Vilsack said.
Vilsack said if youngsters can maintain good nutrition throughout the entire year, they come back to the school, for the new school year, ready to learn.
So far, 37 states, including Wisconsin, have signed up for the program. Vilsack said he hopes the remaining 13 will also sign up.
