MADISON, Wis. (WRN) — The Department of Natural Resources is taking public comment on a new elk management plan.

The Department of Natural Resources wants input on how it manages Wisconsin’s elk herd. Biologist Joshua Speigel says a major part of a new plan is keeping the population of bull elk in check.

“So with elk, you’re able to kind of take a limited surplus and provide that opportunity to hunters within the state without negatively impacting the breeding of those animals,” Speigel said.

Spiegel says the Department and farmers are also working together to try and minimize elk/human contact, especially in the central region where elk can damage crops. You can enter your input online at D N R dot W I dot Gov, just search for “Elk.”
