MADISON, Wis. (WRN) — There’s more to a potential ban on the social app TikTok than just getting it off of American phones.
UW-Madison cyber security strategist Dave Schroeder says there’s concerns that parent company ByteDance is harvesting information on behalf of China.
“There’s been some concern lately about prohibiting foreign governments from buying data from data brokers. So that’s, that is a concern,” said Schroeder.
Proponents of the bill say they’re trying to protect citizens from Chinese influence, opponents say the bill is overreaching and could be used against other social media platforms. The legislation is currently in the US Senate for debate.
